Fall Fashion for Warm Climate Living

Fall is here and feels extra precious this year. In the midst of such a complex year, the seasonal shift has felt like a welcomed invitation to savor the beautifully changing natural world. I am beginning my fall season in the gorgeous Maryland countryside where the leaves are turning to warm yellows and reds and the crisp air invites long walks before dinner. The cooler days have already brought fireside dinners, afternoons spent making squash soup on the stove, and a plethora of chilly moments to cozy up in some of my favorite fall wardrobe staples.

While I am relishing in all of fall’s glories, I am all-too-often reminded of my upcoming return to sunny Florida, where the summery weather is sure to stick around for a while. Growing up on the Florida coast, fall usually felt like a slightly less hot summer with pumpkins and spice thrown in. I can’t bring the changing Maryland leaves with me, or lower the temperature, but I feel freshly determined to find some simple rhythms to keep seasonal beauty present in my life while enduring the stubborn Florida heat.

One way I hope to do this is through the clothes I wear each day. I have been dreaming up some simple ways to embrace fall fashion even on an 85 degree October day, and to my surprise, it’s so possible to do! If you too, find yourself living in a warm climate but have an itch to jump head-first into fall style, read on for some inspiration I’ve compiled to help us in our quest.

Lightweight Scarves

While knit, wool, and cashmere scarves are sadly impractical for a hot day, a hopeful alternative to dial into fall is a lightweight scarf. A silk or cotton scarf, tied around the neck or draped can be a cheery detail to remind of the changing seasons.

Sheer Tights or Sheer Socks

Instead of a heavier knit, opt for a pair of sheer socks or tights. Tights under a pair of jean shorts, a lightweight dress, or a skirt gives a fall edge to a typically “summer” look. Sheer tights or sheer socks underneath a sandal, heel, mule, or loafer gives a nod to fall while remaining breathable.

Boots with Dresses, Skirts, or Shorts

Switching out sandals or sneakers for ankle boots is a simple way to transition a look from summer to fall. Pairing boots with a babydoll dress, a jean skirt, or a pair of shorts gives plenty of airflow for most days, and still helps usher in that fall feeling.

Hats

Hats are a fun way to add some fall spice to a summer look. Instead of a beanie, opt for a woven straw hat for a hotter day, or a felt hat during more moderate evening temperatures.

Muted Fall Tones

Think neutrals, mustard, beige, brown, pumpkin, or  burgundy. Fall tones can help usher in that fall feeling, even on a 90 degree, “humidity’s  got me sweatin’” kinda day. When all else fails (or just because!), bring fall color to your nail polish, breathable cotton dresses, or even your swim suits.

I hope this round-up has breathed some fresh inspiration into your fall-loving sails; and most of all, I hope your fall, no matter the weather, is filled with all things that feel cozy and hopeful.
